URGENT INFO re Supported Care Allowance, Go to News and Report Page.

This website is a source of information, and links to services which can be of assistance to grandparents and other kinship carers.

Our name “Grands” is an acronym for Grandparents Relatives and Supporters

Grands Raising Kids has been set up to provide information and support for grandparents and relatives (kinship carers), caring for children who are unable to live with their parents. We also work to raise community and government awareness of the needs of the children and their carers.

Grands Raising Kids is based in the Hunter Region. We are incorporated in NSW, Australia, and run solely by volunteers.   Some of these are kinship carers. Others are just good people who want to help.  They are the supporters.

Grands Raising Kids is an approved non-profit charity, and has Deductible Gift Recipient status granted by the Australian Tax Office. This means that donations made to the association are tax deductible for the donor.

The Association was set up in early 2013. We will be seeking and applying for grants and donations to fund our work.

All funds raised will be used for the benefit of grandparents and relatives and the children in their care.

Our constitution has the following stated aims and objectives.

“TO ADVOCATE FOR AND SEEK SUPPORT AND SOCIAL JUSTICE FOR CHILDREN IN OUT OF HOME FAMILY CARE AND FOR THEIR CARERS TO RECEIVE THE SUPPORT THEY NEED FOR THEIR WELL-BEING AND SOCIAL AND FINANCIAL EQUITY”

The reasons for children to be living with grandparents or other family members rather than with their parents are many. In many cases the children have suffered varying degrees of physical and/or emotional abuse or neglect. These children are often in need of specialist medical and/or psychological services. Some carers have also had to spend large sums on court costs to secure the custody of the children in order to keep them safe.

We also encourage carers to  share tips and advice with other carers on dealing with problems of the carer’s role.

Membership of the association costs $5 per year, and is open to all carers and other interested people who would like to give their support.

We welcome new members to come and join us to learn more about the association and to find out if we can be of help or they want to become involved in our activities. CONTACT US
